Starting school is one of the most significant transitions in a child’s life. For families navigating autism in Ontario, it raises a deeper set of questions — questions that go well beyond academics. Will my child manage the noise and sensory demands of a classroom? Can they follow a teacher’s instructions? Will they be able to participate with peers?
At Bright Balloons Autism Center, our school readiness program for autism is designed to answer those questions with a yes — by building every skill a child needs before that first day arrives.
A school readiness program for children with autism is a structured, individualised intervention that targets the specific functional, social, and behavioural skills required for successful school participation.
It is not the same as preschool or academic preparation. It is a clinically designed program, delivered through ABA therapy and occupational therapy, that meets each child exactly where they are — and builds toward where their school placement will need them to be.
Bright Balloons’ school readiness program is supervised by Board Certified Behaviour Analysts (BCBAs) and delivered across our Toronto and Ajax locations, supporting children from across Scarborough, Pickering, and the broader GTA.
Every child at Bright Balloons receives an individualised program — but school readiness goals commonly include:
Following Instructions Children learn to respond to teacher directions in both individual and group settings. This includes multi-step instructions, waiting, and attending during transitions between activities.
Routine Tolerance and Flexibility School days are full of transitions — between classrooms, activities, teachers, and expectations. Our school readiness program uses visual supports and reinforcement to build flexibility, reducing the distress that schedule changes often trigger in children with autism.
Attention and Task Completion Sessions gradually extend the duration a child can focus on a structured task — building toward the attention spans a classroom environment requires.
Peer Interaction and Social Participation Group-based activities within Bright Balloons’ programs provide structured practice for turn-taking, greetings, cooperative play, and the social skills that school demands from day one.
Self-Care Independence Toileting independently, managing personal belongings, opening lunch containers, and dressing for outdoor time are all functional skills our school readiness program targets directly.
Fine Motor Readiness Pencil grip, scissor use, and drawing — the foundational fine motor skills for classroom participation — are addressed through our occupational therapy program, which works alongside ABA in a fully integrated approach.
The most effective school readiness programs do not separate these two disciplines. ABA therapy targets the behavioural and learning foundations — instruction following, attention, flexibility, social skills. Occupational therapy targets the physical and sensory foundations — fine motor skills, self-regulation, sensory processing, and daily living independence.
At Bright Balloons, our ABA and OT teams coordinate goals and strategies around each child — ensuring both therapies reinforce rather than contradict each other. This integrated approach consistently produces stronger outcomes at school transition than either therapy delivered in isolation.
Yes. The Ontario Autism Program (OAP) Childhood Budget can be applied toward BCBA-supervised ABA therapy at Bright Balloons — including programs with a school readiness focus. Children under 6 are eligible for up to $20,000 per year through the OAP Childhood Budget.
Bright Balloons supports families through the OAP registration and funding process, so navigating the system does not fall entirely on your shoulders.
Ideally, at least 12 months before your child’s expected school start date — and earlier if possible. Children who begin a structured school readiness program well ahead of the transition consistently show stronger adjustment, better peer relationships, and fewer support requirements once they arrive in the classroom.
If your child is approaching school age and you are not yet sure they are ready, that uncertainty itself is a reason to reach out.
Bright Balloons Autism Center serves families across Toronto, Scarborough, and Ajax with two convenient GTA locations. Our school readiness program for autism is built around your child — not a template.
